What’s An Escape Room?

escape games what are they

The short answer: an escape room is an awesome way to spend an evening with family, friends, or coworkers.

A brief history about escape rooms

Escape rooms, or ER’s as the aficionados call them, are a relatively new form of entertainment that started about 10 years ago. In 2007 the first room popped up in Kyoto, Japan. Creator Takao Kaato was a puzzle enthusiast who wanted to bring his own adventure to life and have people be a part of it[1]. In recent years they have exploded in popularity and can be found from Berlin to Tokyo.

Of course, being locked in a room for an hour while having to think your way free may not be everybody’s idea of fun. Why would people choose this over a relaxing dinner and a movie? Surprisingly, the South China Morning Post found that escape rooms continue to grow in popularity as a tension tamer for “highly stressed students and overworked young professionals”[2]. It turns out being active, whether physical or mental, is very good for the body and brain. An escape room requires players to use both!

How have escape rooms evolved?

So what is our contribution to this new and evolving genre of recreation? High tech puzzles! But you don’t have to be a tech wizard to enjoy our rooms. Players from all backgrounds can appreciate and enjoy the applied science (and the original artwork!) built into our puzzles. ConTRAPtions Escape Rooms combines the excitement of participating in a physical adventure game with the benefits of any team building activity. The best part is it doesn’t matter whether that team is comprised of friends, family, colleagues, or strangers. With escape as the common mission, everyone has a blast!
